Open Industry
Open industry programmes deliver elements of the curriculum in the workplace and give young people the opportunity to experience the world of work at first hand. Through focused educational visits to local businesses/employers they broaden the horizons of the young people and make a direct contribution to their learning.
The majority of Open Industry visit are of two types.
Introduction to the world of work. These experiences are generally for Key Stage 3 students and below and their teachers. They are designed to introduce young people to the world of industry and to give them a better idea of the range of rewarding and challenging careers open to them. They can play a key role in informing decisions about Key Stage 4 options.
Curriculum related in company educational visits, visiting an employer’s premises can be enormously effective in illuminating a curriculum topic. By demonstrating its practical application in a business/commercial environment, a subject can be brought to life in a way that is not always possible in the classroom, Open Industry curriculum related educational visits can be designed for all age groups but are particularly valuable for Key Stage 4 pupils and above.
The range of curriculum topics covered by Open Industry visits is enormous and includes science, maths, design and technology, business studies, engineering, and many more. |
